Tyson Stelzer is a freelance wine writer and author of the books Taming the screw: A manual for winemaking with screw caps, Screwed for good? The case for screw caps on red wines, Seal of Approval: Why choose screw caps? and Cellaring Wine: Do-it-yourself solutions. He is also a joint author of the Heinemann science texts Physics: A contextual approach and Science 10.

Tyson graduated from the University of Queensland in 1996 with Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees and a Diploma in Education. He is currently completing his Masters in Education and holds the position of Head of Senior Science at Trinity Lutheran College on Queensland's Gold Coast.

An extensive tour of the wine regions of France in 2001 led him to the depths of many of the greatest cellars of the Loire Valley, Champagne, Chablis, Burgundy, Alsace, the Rhone Valley and Bordeaux. His fascination with cellars such as these gave birth to a number of home projects on which his 2002 publication, Cellaring Wine: do-it-yourself solutions, was based. His experience with researching, constructing and analysing home cellars spans many years. Read more about cellaring here.

Tyson’s experience in science and education, coupled with a keen interest in the wine industry, has provided the foundation for extensive research into the technical side of screw caps. In recent years, he has established regular contact with hundreds of key wine industry figures working at the forefront of developments with the closure. Tyson has quickly become the most published international writer on this topic.

His groundbreaking book Screwed for good? The case for screw caps on red wines attracted significant attention worldwide after its launch in 2003. Within a year of publication, the edition was already in its third printing, and selling in more than twenty countries. In reviewing the book, The Wine Spectator’s Harvey Steiman concluded, “If screw caps win the day worldwide, Stelzer’s book will have chronicled a turning point. And I will be standing in my cellar, applauding.” Divine Magazine reported that the book represented “the first time that all the contentious issues have been laid out for all to see.” Read more reviews here.

Tyson StelzerIn 2003 he was approached by the New Zealand Screw Cap Initiative in conjunction with The Australian Closure Fund to author a winemaking manual relating to the use of screw caps. Over the subsequent year and a half he worked closely with Jeffrey Grosset, Michael Brajkovich and John Forrest, who served as contributing editors for the project. The finished result is a culmination of the knowledge of these individuals and scores of other industry experts across Australia, New Zealand and the world. More detail here.

Tyson has published more than forty wine-related articles in some fifteen magazines and journals including Practical Winery & Vineyard (California), Australian and New Zealand Grapegrower & Winemaker, Australian and New Zealand Wine Industry Journal, Australian Vignerons, National Liquor News, Winefront Monthly, Winepros and The Winestar Journal.

Each year Tyson assesses and reviews thousands of wines, the best of which are summarised in his annual Top 500 wines. These publications are available for free download here.

In 2003 Tyson completed the Wine and Spirit Education Trust of London Level 3 Advanced Certificate, graduating as dux of his class and achieving more than ninety percent in each of the theory and practical examinations.

Tyson has spoken on wine on state-wide radio programs in almost every state in Australia, on national radio in New Zealand and on various television broadcasts. He has also spoken in person on the topic at many functions. He presented the closing address at the First International Screw Caps Symposium in Blenheim, New Zealand, in November 2004.
